Filming Process

our first day of filming was done at one of our actors house, Jeppe.  The location is beverly hills 1 villa B8. On this day we filmed all of beginning shots of jeppe waking up, brushing his teeth, making breakfast, then taking his medicine and lastly him leaving his house. all of these shots are conveying a healthy diabetic lifestyle.

Shot 1: this is the first shot just establishing jeppe's bedroom. We took 2 different shots for this shot, 1 a pan and the next we using a tracking shot of Jeppe with a dolly. the reason for taking 2 is because we want a variety of shots to chose from, to compare one shot to another to see which fits best.

Shot 2: this shot is of jeppe waking up and then turning off his alarm. for this shot we used a close up of Jeppe's face in order to capture his reaction to a new day.

shot 3: before this shot we took a few other shots of jeppe getting up from different angles and going to the bathroom. Then once we did that we filmed an over the shoulder shot of Jeppe brushing his teeth, showing that he cares about his health.

Shot 4: we then filmed jeppe walking out of his room with a pan shot just to add continuity to the film.

shot 5: next we did a tracking shot of jeppe walking down the stairs and then walking over to his diabetic kit. We then took some close up shots of him taking his blood sugar to show he is dedicated to making sure he is living a healthy lifestyle.

Shot 6: After he has checked his blood sugar he then goes and takes his medicine with some water and for that shot we used a tilt shot to show he is in power and has control of his health. Next we took shots of him making a healthy breakfast.

Shot 7: lastly we used a pan to show him reversing out in his car and driving off into the distance, which will then fade out and lead onto our other actor.

Casting Choice

For our cast we are only going to be using 2 main actors, one who represents Doha and Qatar in a way and the other kind of represents the rest of the world. So the 2 main actors we have picked are Jeppe Laursen and Abdul Aziz Al Nasser. We also have Jeppe's diabetes doctor also who will be taking part in our film.

Jeppe:

We chose Jeppe for quite a few reasons. First of all the main reason is because he is a diabetic himself so he knows a lot of people such as diabetic experts who we could interview, he is also a healthy diabetic so he knows the daily routine that a healthy diabetic has to do in order to stay healthy. Another reason we chose him was because he is in our group which is very convenient for us for filming purposes and how we are going to film his routine.

Abdul:

The reason for choosing Abdul is because we wanted somebody to represent Qatar itself because our main focus is on diabetes in Doha and Abdul is a perfect candidate because he is a local Qatari. Abdul is also in our group so once again it is helpful for us to film collectively as a group.

Sharad Taheri:

This is jeppe's doctor who works at Weill Cornell Medical College working as a Professor of Medicine and is an expert in Diabetes and is good friends with Jeppe so we kindly asked him if we could interview him and get his professional opinion on diabetes itself in Qatar. The reason we chose him is because Jeppe's knows him well so it was easy to get in contact him.

Film Festival Postcard Test Shots

Postcard number 1:

for this postcard we will be merging 2 different photos together in 2 totally different environments. 1 being in a healthy environment, most likely a canteen and the other photo will be in a unhealthy environment such as Mc Donald's or any other fast foot restaurant. we will be splitting the photos right down the middle and merge them together when both of them are eating 2 different types of food.

this first photo is of 1 of our actors (Jeppe) who is portrayed as the healthy diabetic who will be eating in the healthy environment. he will be either eating some salad or any type of fruit.

this is just a test shot of a healthy environment that we might use. we chose this because it has pictures of healthy food and the slogan for this place is 'be smart, eat healthy'.

this is the other shot we will be using of our other actor (Abdul). Abdul will be playing the role of unhealthy diabetic, where we most likely will take this in a Mc Donald's because Mc Donald's connotes an unhealthy lifestyle. The food that Abdul will be eating will be a big burger with a lot of unhealthy toppings inside so that the audience can instantly tell that he is living an unhealthy lifestyle.

Postcard 2:

for this postcard the location we would be using for the real thing would be on Jeppe's balcony because it has an overview shot of the torch, so that the audience can tell that it is set in Qatar due to the iconic landmark of the torch. This test shot is taken in school because we didn't have time to go to Jeppe's to take a test shot from his balcony. for the final piece for this postcard it will be in black and white apart from the diabetes pen which will be in colour to emphasise the importance of the pen and how it is used.

Diabetes Contacts

We got a business card of one of the doctors that specialise in diabetes within Qatar and we will hopefully be able to interview him so he can explain the problem with diabetes in Qatar itself.

We contacted Qatar Diabetes Association to ask them if they can help with our product by interviewing Doctors, Professionals and even people that have diabetes themselves in Qatar. We thought this would be a good idea because it both helps promote QDA and also gives us more opportunities to get our message out to as many people as possible because hopefully QDA will promote our short film to patients and people involved with them.

we had to fill in permission forms with passport details and other important things in order to be allowed to film Qatar foundation.

this is our site map for our website. The site map is used to help navigate around the website itself, making it easier for the audience to find certain information. Our site map isn't very complex compared to big industry websites because its not in the criteria to have a massive website is is mainly for presentation and computer skills.

Film Festival Postcard drafts

this is our first draft for our film festival postcard which is mainly focused on one of our actors on a balcony overlooking the torch and injecting himself with insulin. we have gone for this idea because it shows that it is set in doha by having the iconic torch present but the attention of the viewer will be fixed on the diabetes pen because we are going to have the rest of the background in black and white and then only have the pen in colour to draw attention to the pen itself. This draft was drawn by Jeppe.

this is our second idea where we have both main actors in 2 different environments to show the contrast between the 2 different types of people and what their lifestyle is like. for the left hand side we want to use a fast food restaurant to show a not so healthy lifestyle and for the right hand side we want it to be set in a healthy cafeteria showing the actor happy with his life compared to the unhealthy person. This draft was drawn by me.

Website Homepage Draft

we have 2 different templates for our website homepage which both are fairly similar such as they both will have the same colour scheme of blue and white due to that being the scheme we have chosen for the whole project. Also both of the templates will have pictures of either shots from our short film or pictures of our cast and crew.  We also added different sub headings to click on in order to find out more about the film or the background of the making of the project.

Location Planning

For location planning we scouted around doha for areas that we are going to use to start off our short film, we wanted to find areas that are unique and can easily identify doha so the audience knows that Qatar is our main location. The areas we chose to establish Qatar are the main areas of attraction when visiting doha, Aspire and the torch, the pearl, the corniche and Katara.

We will also be using other locations for our short film such as the houses of our 2 different actors. first we will be filming in our first actors house, Jeppe. for this location we aim to make Jeppe seem like a healthy responsible person who's treats diabetes seriously and looks after himself. then for the 2nd actors house we want it to be more messy as if the person isn't looking after themselves and not taking diabetes seriously.

Lastly we are going to use different health centres as our locations. we will be filming in Hamad hospital which is the main hospital in Qatar and we will also be filming in the diabetes centre in doha.

Title Design

This is what we have decided to use for our logo design. We didn't want to make the logo too childish or fun because we aim to make our short film as professional and serious as possible due to it being about a very serious condition, diabetes. The rest of my group decided on the choice of colour, black with the two 'e's being red because that is the colour scheme we are going for and I designed the logo myself by using a website that generates different fonts and downloaded the font and typed out our title.

Mood board

For this mood board I've chosen pictures of various different things that all relate to our short film. I've chosen pictures of the location that we are going to use, Qatar and also a picture of the world so show that we are targeting our short film at everyone. I've also put in a picture of an arab to show that one of our characters will be arab and i've put in junk food and a fast food restaurant to show all the bad things that can give you diabetes. lastly there is pictures of equipment you'll need to use if you are a diabetic.

Audience Profile

this is a profile for the type of person or people that our short film is aimed at. So basically our short film is really aimed at all ages because diabetes can effect anyone at anytime, so we want to direct it at all ages so that everyone is aware of the seriousness of diabetes. we are trying to get this message across by using both young and old characters.

It is kind of the same for the type of gender, we want to aim it at both genders, male and female. the reason for this is the same as it was for the target age, which is to get the message across to as many people as possible because both genders can get diabetes. we want to try getting this message across by maybe using both a male and female as characters in our short film, but we still haven't decided on this yet.

for nationality we are primarily aiming our short film at the people of Qatar because we are based in Doha and the message we are trying to trying to get across is mostly targeted at people in doha due to it having the worst ratio for diabetics to non diabetics in the world. however we also aim to get the message across to all different nationalities just to show what it can become like if they don't make a change, as it is a world wide problem. we are going to show this by probably using a typical arab to represent what it is like to have diabetes in Qatar and compare it to somebody who doesn't have it

Audience Research 2 - Questionnaire

Audience Research 1 - Focus Group

We each had different roles whilst producing this focus group. This is what each person did:

- Jeppe: Jeppe came up with the different questions to ask and asked the people the questions.

-Abdul: Abdul was in charge of filming the focus group.

-Maya: Maya organised the setting for the focus group and the people who were involved.

-Me: I was in charge of editing the focus group.

Documentary Editing Analysis

editing is different between a film and a short film (e.g. a movie is different to a documentary/short film). It needs to be different because of the time length difference between the 2. For example a film or movie would need to have a lot of continuity in order for the film to make sense, whereas in a short film there isn't really much continuity because they don't really tell the whole story, they only tell it in parts (only including the more important parts).

They will use a lot of jump cuts for short  films in order to cut out all the slow and boring parts, in a way creating a sense of pace to the short film. There tends to be interviews in documentaries/short films with either experts or just every day people in general. For these interviews they will probably use mid close up shots normally on a black background the reason for this is because they don't want distractions in the background they only want to viewer to focus on the persons face so that is why they use the mid close up.

Mise-en-scene for our documentary will have natural lighting for the majority of our short film and for interviews we will have bright lighting just on the person and no lighting in the background. The reason for this is because we want the attention to be focused on the person we are interviewing in order for the audience to understand and listen to what he/she is saying. there won't be any specific costumes for our short film the only costume we will be using is a thobe for our arab actor so that people can see the difference between the 2 different actors. For non-verbal communication we want our actors to give off a very serious vibe because we want it to reflect on our aim which is serious about improving the problem with diabetes in Qatar as it could be a life or death situation. We will also be using a lot of props in our short film such as the diabetes pen to inject yourself just so we make our film seem as realistic as possible.

Documentary Narrative Analysis

I have chosen 'The weight of the Nation' as it follows 'Todorov's theory' well and explains diabetes well. it is a documentary about diabetes and throughout the documentary it goes through all the states of the theory apart from the first step. It is targeted at type 2 diabetes patients in America but it can also relate to people around the world.

1st: state of equilibrium:
this step is usually just getting to know the setting and the characters throughout the story. at this stage it should provide you with the most basic knowledge, and everything thing should be in place.

2nd: disturbance in the equilibrium:
for the documentary I've chosen there is an immediate disturbance in the equilibrium where it states how a peoples lives have been turned upside down due to diabetes. by doing this it really highlights the main problem which is diabetes.

3rd: recognition of the problem:
For this stage it also builds up the story even more by adding in more detail from experts or doctors  and also by explaining how you can get diabetes by using simple knowledge about it so that it makes it easier for the audience to understand,in order to make the audience see that this is a massive problem. really emphasising its effect it can have on people. it makes people realise that something has to be done about this problem.

4th: attempt to fix problem:
for this stage it really interacts with the audience, by getting the doctors to try and persuade the audience to make a change and tells them how they can make this change by giving professional advice on how to prevent diabetes. they do this by giving advice on how this problem can be fixed.

5th: return/change in equilibrium:
this is the last stage in the theory, this is where to problem has been fixed and either it returns to the old equilibrium or it will change to a new and better one. For this documentary it has changed to a new equilibrium of recognition and willingness to change making people think about what they do with their bodies after watching this documentary.
